How to export your Hacker News favorites and upvotes
Updated 2026-10-12
The short answer: Hacker News has no export, and neither its official API nor Algolia’s search API includes favorites or votes. Your favorites are on a public page; your upvotes are private. Bookmark Hero collects both, stories and comments, keeps them searchable, and exports them, free.
Where Hacker News keeps them
- Favorites are at
news.ycombinator.com/favorites?id=yourname; add&comments=tfor favorite comments. These pages are public: anyone can open them. - Upvotes are at
news.ycombinator.com/upvoted?id=yourname, visible only to you when logged in. A moderator has confirmed both (HN).
The official API exposes a user’s id, karma, about, and submissions, not favorites or votes (HackerNews/API), and Algolia’s search API does not index them either. The only way to get them out is to page through those lists, thirty at a time.
With Bookmark Hero
- Install Bookmark Hero, switch on Hacker News, and visit the site once while logged in.
- Your favorite stories, favorite comments, upvoted stories, and upvoted comments come onto the shelf, with the story a comment belongs to, the linked article’s address, points, and comment counts. The first time, it walks back through all of them at a polite pace.
- Search any word, or narrow with
module:hn. Export from Settings → Storage → Export as CSV, JSON, Markdown, or a bookmarks file.

Your upvotes stay private: they are read in your browser with your own login and kept there. Nothing is sent to us.
